How to add fragrance to your wax and make a scented candle? New in the candle-making game? Want to push your skills to the next level and add a fresh scent to your beautiful homemade candles? Everything you need to know about fragrances from our candle-making expert!
Here at General Wax, we currently carry two main families of fragrances: Regular and Ultra. Our regular fragrances are compatible with all wax types we offer. You can use any of the regular fragrances with any wax, either you decide to go with a natural soy/coconut wax blend like our Cargill C3 or paraffin like our House Blend.
Our Ultra fragrances are compatible with all wax types as well. Their difference lays in the throw strength and overall premium, more sophisticated quality of the fragrance. Comparably to the Regular Fragrances, you can use our Ultras with any wax we offer.
When it comes to beeswax, you are able to add fragrances to the wax once melting but we cannot guarantee the results! Beeswax is already naturally scented and the results might not be the ones expected when mixing fragrances to the honey-like smell of beeswax. No matter what your project is, we always recommend doing your own burn test to make sure your candle is as safe and delightful as you expect.
CARGILL C3 Soy Wax Container Blend is 100% soy wax from CARGILL and by far our most popular due to competitive pricing and a high quality product. It’s quite resistant to bloom (white frosting) and “wet spots” while producing an excellent scent throw with fragrances. Our wax maintains an even burn pool with consistent color retention and like our C1 wax, possesses good glass adhesion.
CARGILL C3 Soy Wax Container Blend is specifically designed for container candles, producing an opaque product with a balanced, creamy look. Shrinkage is minimal when cooling however most jars will require touch-up with a heat gun or a second pouring. It comes in flake form with a melt point of 127℉ and a flash point >600℉.
See our illustrated instructions for melting wax safely.

Our SB 1000 soy blend container wax has a very smooth surface and adheres well to glass containers. The blend is made of 60% soy wax and a 40% blend of paraffin, UV and an enhancing additive.
Compared to 100% Soy Wax, SB 1000 soy blend container wax has superior cold & warm fragrance throw and ideal burn quality. Use HTP wicks for best burn performance. This wax puts off a stronger smell. The scent lasts longer and smells fresh for quite some time. The reason for this is because they burn at a much slower rate and the fragrance is released at a slower rate as well. Which in return will give you a fresher smelling candle for longer.

Our 128 House Blend wax (4 pack) is a special in-house blend designed for votives, tapers, and jar containers. Our own special in-house wax is blended primarily for jar container candles, votive candles and taper candles. We package our 128 House Blend in convenient, manageable 1 lb. bricks.
IMPORTANT NOTICE
When making votive candles using 128 House blend, it is necessary to add 1% Vybar 260. This will help harden and shrink the wax, making it more opaque and easier to remove from the mold. The addition of Vybar will also result in an overall smoother candle surface and has the added benefit of accepting more fragrance.
You can make your DIY taper candles from our 128 house blend wax. These candles make lovely holiday gifts. Candles are a great way to set the mood. These tapers work well in any candle holder, and they can even be used for emergency kits or power outages.
Votive candles add ambiance and warmth to any setting and are simple to customize to the theme of your next event just by changing the color and fragrance. Votive candles are not meant to be freestanding. While the making process is similar to that of a pillar candle, they burn like a container candle. Make sure you use holders specifically votive candles.
You probably heard the term flashpoint used in fragrance oils without thinking much about it. The flashpoint is the temperature at which point the fragrance oil becomes combustible if exposed to a spark or flame. The lower the flashpoint, the faster it can catch on fire. In general, the flashpoint is mostly important for those who make gel candles: a lower flashpoint might restrict you from shipping your candles in certain ways as it would be a fire hazard. It is recommended to use fragrances with a flashpoint above 175ºF; anything under that and your gel candle will easily catch fire. We also recommend you check with your shipping company to learn more about their regulations.
We always recommend you use our Candle Making Thermometer to constantly monitor your wax temperature and get the best results. As a general rule, and regardless of the kind of wax you use, it is recommended to:
Fragrance oils do not degrade in hot waxes. So if you pour your fragrance in a wax that's hotter than the fragrance flashpoint, it doesn't mean that the fragrance will lose its throw or catch fire. However, it degrades when it reaches a boiling point, which is way hotter than the flashpoint temperature.

This Standard candle melting pot is a must-have for DIY candles. Our melting pot has been an industry standard for over 60 years. It holds up to about 4 pounds of melted wax. Double boil wax with the addition of our steamer pot to prevent the wax from overheating.
The body of this standard candle melting pot is a thick aluminum cup. It is easy to clean and it is fast to conduct heat. The opening handle is anti-scald. It is safe for you. The mouth is designed as an eagle diversion mouth for an easy pour. With this melting pot, it won’t take long to get the wax melted. Just put your wax in the pot, heat it, and that’s it. Once that’s done, grab the handle and pour as needed. You’ll find that the handle and exterior of the pot stay close to the temperature of the room you’re working in.
The inside traps the heat inside well and doesn’t allow the wax to stick to the surface when you’re ready to wash it out. Excellent heat conductivity helps the wax to cool down really quickly. Nonstick and easy to wash with soap and water.

In general, most waxes will not hold more than 12 percent fragrance. Usually, candles you find in stores contain an average of about 6 percent fragrance whereas high-quality premium candles contain up to 10 percent. Read about your wax to find out the maximum amount of fragrance you can use.
As a rule of thumb, in order to optimize scent throw and not compromise your candle stability, we recommend using between 6 to 10 percent of fragrance in your candle mixture.
PERCENT x WAX WEIGHT = FRAGRANCE AMOUNT
So let's say you are using a soy wax that can hold up to 10 percent worth of fragrance and you are making a 10-ounce candle, you would need to use 1 ounce of fragrance:
0,10 (percent) x 10 oz (wax weight) = 1 oz (fragrance amount)
As mentioned before, add your fragrance at a temperature high enough for the wax to fully expand but not too high so the fragrance does not degrade and lose its throw.
In general, you can add fragrance when the wax is between 175ºF to 185ºF. Also, make sure you remove the wax from the heat source before adding your fragrance to the mixture.
Always refer to the manufacturer's recommendations and run your own burn tests to make sure of the results. Candle making is like chemistry and there's no way to guarantee the results better than a burn test.
